How To Spot Duplicate Charges Across Multiple Bank Accounts

Learn a practical review process for spotting duplicate or unexpected charges across multiple bank accounts and cards.

Duplicate or unexpected charges can be harder to notice when you use more than one account or card.

Moneysmart suggests reviewing bank statements or app transactions over the past few months and checking for fees, charges, or transactions you do not recognise.

Start with a short review window

Choose a recent period, such as the last 30 days. Look across every account and card you use for everyday spending.

Sort by merchant or description

Look for payments with the same merchant name, similar description, or similar amount. Pay attention to charges that occur on the same day or within a few days of each other.

Check regular payments separately

Some payments repeat because they are subscriptions or bills. Others repeat because a card has been retried, a merchant has charged twice, or a service has moved between plans.

Check the provider account, invoice, receipt, or bank record before assuming a charge is wrong.

Review unknown transactions carefully

If you do not recognise a transaction, check merchant names, receipts, shared card use, and subscriptions. If a charge still looks wrong, contact your bank or provider promptly.
